I remember the exact moment I became a grandma — it seems like yesterday. And yet, it’s been 13 years since I witnessed the birth of my first grandchild. Witnessing my granddaughter’s birth was the most miraculous moment of my life. It set me on a fascinating journey of exploring what it means to be a modern grandparent.
Over the past 13 years, I’ve read hundreds of books and articles about the role of a grandparent, talked to other grandparents about their experiences, written blog posts and a book about my own experiences as a grandma, and spoken to groups of grandparents about why grandparents are so important in their children’s and grandchildren’s lives.
Recently, I spoke to a group of grandparents on “Why Grandparents Matter.” Below is a 9-minute version of my one-hour presentation. The key points in my talk include:
- What’s changed about grandparenting over the past three generations?
- What are the biggest challenges facing today’s grandparents?
- Why do grandparents matter?
